Encouraging Beneficial Insects
How to tip the balance: encourage beneficials, discourage pests, and work with the environment.
Why beneficial insects matter
Biological control does not start with releasing insects. It starts with creating conditions where beneficial insects can survive, respond, and stay.
Most pests are fast and tolerant of poor conditions. Most beneficials are slower to build, but more stable once established.
The key idea — pests arrive first
- Pests appear before beneficials
- Beneficials increase in response to prey, not in anticipation
- Balance always lags behind pest pressure
This delay is normal. The aim is not zero pests, but faster, longer-lasting natural responses.
