Practical biological control, IPM and environmental pest-management knowledge.

Tomato Russet Mite

Overview

Tomato russet mite is a microscopic eriophyid mite that causes bronzing and collapse in tomatoes.

It is one of the most difficult tomato pests to detect early.

Main symptoms

Typical symptoms: - bronzed stems - leaf curling - dry brittle foliage - plant collapse - russeting

Damage usually begins low in the crop.

Conditions favouring russet mite

Condition Risk
Hot protected crops High
Dense canopy Moderate
Delayed detection Very High

Monitoring

Inspect: - lower stems - bronzed tissue - dry leaves - suspicious stem discolouration

Magnification is usually required.

IPM approach

Useful strategies: - early inspections - lower crop monitoring - hotspot isolation - avoiding plant stress
