Echinothrips

Overview

Echinothrips is a foliage-feeding thrips species associated mainly with ornamentals and protected crops.

Unlike strongly flower-associated thrips, Echinothrips is more linked to foliage feeding and leaf silvering.

Symptoms

  • leaf silvering
  • bronzing
  • dark feeding spots
  • foliage scarring
  • reduced ornamental quality

Crop relevance

Important in:

  • ornamentals
  • bedding plants
  • foliage crops
  • protected nursery systems

IPM relevance

Monitoring should focus on:

  • foliage inspections
  • hotspot mapping
  • lower canopy checks
  • maintaining predator continuity

Additional IPM notes

Echinothrips can be important in protected ornamentals and glasshouse crops.

Unlike some flower-focused thrips, it may be found more on foliage, especially leaf undersides.

Symptoms may include silvering, dark faecal spots and reduced crop quality.

Monitoring should include both sticky traps and direct leaf inspections, especially in dense protected crops.
