Summary
Humidity matters because it sets VPD (plant water stress) and directly influences pest activity and survival. For Phase 1 pests, humidity is a major differentiator: mites are structurally humidity/VPD sensitive, thrips less so, aphids least directly.
What this driver controls
- VPD → transpiration → plant stress + Ca delivery → tissue resilience
- Pest water balance, feeding behaviour, dispersal
- Leaf wetness episodes (disease interplay + canopy microclimate pockets)
Pest fingerprints
Thrips
- High RH: often slight suppression (less movement), but not a reliable control.
- Low RH: tends to increase movement + feeding; damage can worsen when plants are stressed.
- Thrips risk is more temperature/flower-timing driven than humidity-driven.
Spider mite
- High RH suppresses population growth (less favourable conditions).
- Low RH / high VPD strongly accelerates populations and reduces plant resilience.
- This is why spider mite is “structural instability”: once VPD bias exists, outbreaks are hard to reverse.
Aphids
- Humidity has little direct effect compared with plant growth tempo and nutrition.
- Indirect: stress-softened tissue (from high VPD) can still increase susceptibility and reduce recovery.
Beneficial stability / failure modes
- High VPD can reduce efficacy/establishment of some biocontrol approaches (behavioural + plant-mediated).
- Poor humidity management creates microclimate pockets (dense canopy) where hotspots form.
Monitoring signals
- Track RH and temperature together; infer VPD.
- Watch for repeated cycles: very humid nights + very dry days (whiplash).
- Canopy signals: leaf curl, tip burn risk, midday wilting, uneven transpiration zones.
Stabilising actions
- Aim for consistent VPD bands by crop stage; avoid extreme dry-down.
- Use airflow to reduce boundary layer and prevent humid pockets without over-drying.
- For mite risk: treat persistent high VPD as a first-class risk factor and bias prevention accordingly.
